Short answer
An authorized dealer is a company that buys and sells the product through the official channel of the manufacturer or its Turkey distributor. An authorized service is a service authorized to repair that brand's devices; it may or may not be the same company as the dealer. Importer warranty is a situation in which the warranty obligation is taken on by the company that imported the product instead of the brand's official distributor, and in case of a fault the process depends on that company.
How does a device get to you?
A camera or recorder leaves the manufacturer, is brought into Turkey by an importer or distributor, and is distributed from there to dealers and installation companies. The brand's official distributor usually manages the Turkish user manual, local technical support and the official warranty process.
The same product sometimes also enters the market outside the official channel, through another importer. This is called parallel import. The product can be genuine; the difference is in who the fault and support process depend on.
Installation companies can also buy the product from different points in this chain. When you get a quote, asking whether the company bought the product from the distributor, from another dealer or from a different importer is not a strange question to ask. How comfortably the company answers this question is also an indicator.
What does authorized dealer mean?
An authorized dealer is a company to which the brand or the distributor has given sales and, often, installation authority in a particular region. This authority is usually shown with a certificate and is valid for a set period.
The practical meaning of buying from an authorized dealer is this: the product comes through the official channel, software updates and technical documents are easier to access, and in case of a fault the replacement process runs through the distributor. The dealer may have been through training that familiarizes them with the product; you are free to ask about this.
Installation quality can differ between two authorized dealers of the same brand; evaluate the dealership together with the company's similar work and its handover file.
Expert note: Compare the brand and date on the dealer certificate with the product in the quote. A company showing the authorization certificate of another brand means nothing for the product it is quoting.
Is an authorized service different from a dealer?
An authorized service is a service authorized to repair the brand's devices or replace them under warranty. With some brands the dealer also provides service; with others, the faulty device is sent to the distributor's central service.
The work done by the installation company and the repair of the device are different things. The installation company removes the faulty camera, fits a spare in its place and sends the faulty device to service. How long this process will take and whether a spare device will be provided in the meantime should be asked at the quote stage.
When a recorder fails, also think about the recordings inside it. Removing the disks and keeping them with you before the device is sent to service prevents your recordings from going to a third party. This is also a point to be careful about from the KVKK standpoint.
What does importer warranty mean?
In an importer warranty, the company that brought in the product takes on the product's warranty responsibility. If this company does its job properly, you may not have any trouble. But if the company stops operating or no longer brings in the product, there may be nowhere left to apply for warranty and spare parts.
These products are sometimes cheaper than their official-channel equivalents. When weighing the price difference, look for answers to these questions:
Before choosing a product with an attractive price, think through a fault scenario. If the recorder does not turn on one day, take into account who you will take it to and that you will be without recording during that time. This period may be bearable for a home; for a jeweler or a school it is a long gap.
- Whose company name is written on the warranty certificate?
- Where is a faulty device sent, and who replaces it?
- Is the product's software the same as the version distributed in Turkey, and can it receive updates?
- Are there a Turkish menu and user manual?
- Will a spare for the same model be available in a few years?
Why does it matter more in corporate purchases?
In a school or hospital, dozens of cameras are the same model. A year later, when a few cameras fail, not being able to find the same model leads to a mixed system of different models and brands. The recorder may not recognize the new camera.
When you buy as a consumer, Consumer Protection Law No. 6502 and the rules on warranty certificates apply. When you buy as a company or institution, the relationship may be governed by different rules; that is why it is even more important to put the warranty terms in the contract in writing.
Expert note: For the scope of the warranty, consumer rights, and corporate contract terms, consult your organization's legal department or a specialist.
Installation warranty vs. product warranty
A security system involves two separate responsibilities. The product warranty covers the device itself and is the responsibility of the brand or the importer. Workmanship during installation belongs to the company that did the installation: a loose connector, a badly crimped cable end, or a junction box left exposed to water is not a device fault.
Ask for these two points to be written separately in the quote. If it is written down under what conditions the installer will fix workmanship errors and what steps they will take for a product fault, there will be no argument about who does what when something fails.
Situations such as power fluctuations, lightning, or misuse are usually outside the product warranty. To reduce these risks, surge protection and grounding should be discussed as part of the installation.
What to ask when getting a quote
The label on the product box, the serial number, and the warranty certificate should be given to you at handover. Even if the installer has thrown away the boxes, they should write the serial numbers in the device list. When something fails, the warranty claim is made using this number.
Ask the company giving you a quote through which channel the product comes, who provides the warranty, and who will manage the process when something fails. Have the answer added to the quote file in writing.
Desa Bilişim is an authorized dealer of Cede, Westa, Decon, Fujitron, and Dahua; we state clearly in the quote the channel and warranty process of the products we quote.
Frequently asked
Does a parallel-imported product mean it is fake?
No, the product can be genuine. The difference is in who the warranty, software and support process depend on. Before buying, check which company's name is written on the warranty certificate.
How do I know if a company is an authorized dealer?
Ask the company for its authorization certificate and check the brand and the date on the certificate. To be sure, you can ask the brand's Turkey distributor for the dealer list.
Is the installing company obliged to repair the device?
The installation service and the device warranty are separate matters. Who will do what in case of a fault should be written in the quote and the contract; it is useful to consult an expert on this.
