Protecting cameras and electronics in the Şanlıurfa heat

Protecting cameras and electronics in the Şanlıurfa heat

Short answer

In Şanlıurfa summers, direct sun, unventilated cabinets and dust wear devices out the most. Choose the outdoor camera to match the operating temperature in the manufacturer's datasheet, and if possible place it under the eaves or on a facade that does not get afternoon sun. Put the recorder, the modem and the switch in a place with airflow and out of the sun.

How does heat affect which devices?

Electronic boards slow down as they heat up, restart to protect themselves, or suffer permanent damage. On a camera, the first sign of this is usually the image cutting out in the afternoon or the infrared light weakening at night. In a recorder, the disks heat up and their lifespan shortens. A modem and a switch turn themselves off and on; you notice this as "the internet keeps coming and going."

Summers in Şanlıurfa are long and dry. A concrete wall facing the sun stores heat until evening and keeps releasing it at night. So the device is strained during the day and cannot cool down enough at night.

There is an easy way to tell that the problem comes from heat: look at the time of the fault. If the camera works fine in the morning and at night but cuts out in the afternoon, or if the recorder restarts only in the summer months, heat is the first suspect. If the same problem never happens in winter, this guess gets stronger.

  • The image freezes or cuts out at certain hours.
  • The night image is darker and noisier than before.
  • The recorder's case is too hot to touch.
  • There are hourly or daily gaps in the recording.
  • The modem lights go off and on several times during the day.

Choosing the spot for an outdoor camera

When installing a camera, first look at the facade. A west-facing wall gets full afternoon sun, and the camera housing gets hot during the hottest hours. If there is a spot that sees the same area from the north or east facade, prefer it. Shade under the eaves, under a balcony or at a building corner makes a serious difference.

Direct sun entering the lens is a separate problem. When morning or evening sun hits the lens, the image turns white and the sensor wears out over time. Aim the camera slightly downward, not toward the horizon.

  • If you have to put a camera on the west facade, choose a housing with a sun shield.
  • Mount the camera on a light-colored wall rather than a dark surface, if possible.
  • Use a junction box between the housing and the wall; keep the cable joints inside the box.
  • Put the part of the cable that stays in the sun along the wall inside a UV-resistant conduit or pipe.

What do you look at in the datasheet when choosing a camera?

Every camera's technical document lists an operating temperature range. Make sure the range of the model you buy for outdoor use comfortably covers summer conditions. Asking the seller only "is it an outdoor camera?" is not enough; ask separately about the operating temperature and the protection rating.

The protection rating is shown with IP. This code tells how well the device is sealed against dust and water. Because dust is as important a factor as heat in Şanlıurfa, look for a high IP value on an outdoor camera. A metal housing dissipates heat differently from plastic; which one is suitable depends on the mounting location.

Expert note: Before buying the camera, ask for its technical document and read the operating temperature line yourself. Do not put a product on an outside facade if no document is provided for it.

  • A facade that gets direct sun
  • Operating temperature in the datasheet
  • Cabinet and enclosure ventilation
  • Dust and protection rating (IP)
  • UPS and battery condition
  • Regular check before summer

Where do you put the recorder, modem and switch?

The mistake we see most often is the recorder and modem squeezed into a closed kitchen cabinet or under the stairs. These cabinets have no airflow, and in summer it is much hotter inside than outside. When other things are placed on top of the devices, the air vents get blocked too.

Choose a corner out of the sun and with airflow for these devices. If there are several devices, a small ventilated wall-mounted cabinet is a good solution. If the business has a larger installation, the cooling of the server room needs to be planned separately. A weekend when the air conditioner breaks down can stop the whole system.

  • Do not stack the devices on top of each other; leave an air gap between them.
  • Do not have a heat-producing appliance, boiler or oven next to the cabinet or shelf.
  • Listen from time to time to check that the recorder's fan is running.
  • Check disk health from the recorder's menu or remotely.

When dust and heat come together

If heat is the problem on its own, dust makes it worse. As dust sticks to the fan blades and air vents, the device heats up more. A layer of dust on the glass of an outdoor camera reflects the infrared light back at night, and the image looks foggy.

After a dust storm, it is a good habit to wipe the glass of outdoor cameras with a soft, damp cloth and to clean the air vents of devices in enclosed spaces. We explained this check in detail in our post-dust-storm checklist.

Power fluctuations and UPS

In summer, when air conditioner load increases, fluctuations and short outages are common on the grid. The recorder shuts down hard at every outage, and the disk can be damaged by this. Connecting the recorder, the modem and the PoE to a small uninterruptible power supply (UPS) reduces this risk.

The UPS itself is also affected by heat; its battery wears out faster in a hot environment. Put the UPS in a cool place along with the devices and have the battery condition checked once a year.

If outdoor cameras are powered through a PoE switch, connecting the switch to a UPS also protects the cameras against short outages. If cameras are powered with separate adapters, protecting each adapter one by one is hard; this is why central power is more practical in new installations.

A short check at the start of summer

Setting aside a day before June to review the system is easier than chasing faults in August. Watch the cameras' image once in the afternoon; if there is dropout or color distortion, make a note. Check that the last few days of recordings on the recorder are complete.

Open the cabinet with the recorder and modem and feel its temperature with your hand, and listen to whether the fans are turning. If you do not remember when the UPS last had a battery test, add that to the list too. If there is a device you cannot solve with your own check or that needs to be moved, ask for an on-site inspection. Frequently asked

Does adding a sun shield on top of my camera help?

It helps on a camera facing west or south. The sun shield reduces direct light on the housing and blocks sun from entering the lens. But if the camera's operating temperature is not suitable for the region to begin with, a sun shield alone is not enough.

Why does the recorder restart by itself in summer?

The most common causes are overheating and power fluctuations. Check whether the device is in a closed cabinet, whether its fan is running and whether it is connected to a UPS. If the problem continues, the disk or the power adapter should be checked.

Is a metal or plastic housing better for an outdoor camera?

There is no single right answer. A metal housing is more resistant to impact and also dissipates heat differently. The choice is made by considering the mounting location, how much sun it gets and the operating range in the camera's datasheet together.
